Genoa Design Celebrates Role in the Launch of the First Large Vessel Under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS)<\/strong><\/p>\n

(December 12, 2017, Mount Pearl, NL): Genoa Design International (\u201cGenoa\u201d) joins Seaspan Shipyardsthe Government of Canada, and the Canadian Coast Guard to celebrate the launch of the first large non-combat ship to be designed and built under the National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS). The launch event took place at Seaspan Shipyards in Vancouver on Friday, December 8.<\/p>\n

Genoa provides modeling and detailed production design services for the shipbuilding industry and was responsible for building the 3D model (the virtual ship) for the future Sir John Franklin<\/em>, (OFSV1), the first of three Offshore Fisheries Science Vessels currently being constructed by Seaspan Shipyards. Over the three-year construction period on OFSV1, a total of 98 Genoa employees logged approximately 128,000 hours on the project.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe awarding of the contract to Seaspan Shipyards by the Government of Canada to build non-combat vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy and the Canadian Coast Guard is contributing significantly to Genoa\u2019s growth in Canada,\u201d says Gina Pecore, CEO, Genoa Design International. \u201cWe\u2019ve provided design support for the fishery science vessels, and we\u2019re now doing the same for Coast Guard\u2019s Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel and the Navy\u2019s Joint Support Ship. With several years of Canadian work ahead, in addition to our US contracts, we anticipate continued growth for our teams in Mount Pearl and Vancouver.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith our company\u2019s work under the National Shipbuilding Strategy, Seaspan Shipyards has built a supply chain of more than 400 companies that stretches across Canada,\u201d noted Brian Carter, President & CEO of Seaspan Shipyards. \u201cThe Government of Canada\u2019s commitment to build ships in Canada with a Canadian workforce and supply chain is rebuilding our domestic shipbuilding industry and ensuring that it is well-positioned for future growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Newfoundland-based company in business since 1995, Genoa has experienced steady growth and today employs approximately 80 designers and support staff. While the majority of Genoa\u2019s work has traditionally been in the commercial shipbuilding sector in the United States, the National Shipbuilding Strategy is bringing work home for companies like Genoa.<\/p>\n
