A culture of sustainable, intentional growth has propelled Newfoundland and Labrador\u2019s Genoa Design International to heavyweight status in the North American shipbuilding and defence sector.<\/b>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/h4>\n

Genoa Design International has been named one\u00a0of The Globe and Mail\u2019s Top Growing Companies<\/a> in Canada\u00a0for 2021.\u00a0Ranking\u00a0high\u00a0on this year\u2019s\u00a0list, the company\u2019s\u00a0trajectory\u00a0to growth\u00a0has\u00a0been over\u00a025 years\u00a0in the making. It\u2019s a success story\u00a0built upon\u00a0a\u00a0mindset of\u00a0innovation and\u00a0sustained growth, and\u00a0the\u00a0fostering of\u00a0a thriving ecosystem. And\u00a0it\u00a0has\u00a0all been\u00a0achieved\u00a0from an unlikely place – a rocky island in the North Atlantic.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Genoa Design\u00a0is\u00a0anchored\u00a0firmly\u00a0in the middle of the shipbuilding process.\u00a0The\u00a0company\u00a0delivers\u00a0production design and 3D modeling services to\u00a0ship\u00a0and naval\u00a0defence\u00a0builders\u00a0(think\u00a0tech-based company\u00a0with traditional\u00a0industry\u00a0clients).<\/span><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Genoa\u00a0started\u00a0in 1995\u00a0from the\u00a0home\u00a0of\u00a0company founder\u00a0and former\u00a0Canadian Military\u00a0Naval Officer\u202fLeonard Pecore\u00a0in\u00a0Newfoundland\u00a0and Labrador.\u00a0His\u00a0concept\u00a0was a novel one\u00a0at\u00a0the time \u2013 that\u00a0engineering\u00a0designs for ships\u00a0could be delivered remotely\u00a0over the internet.\u00a0It turned out to be a\u00a0pretty good idea.<\/span>
\n<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Charting a new course in\u00a0shipbuilding<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

The road to Genoa becoming the largest dedicated firm of its kind in North America really kicked into high gear when the Canadian Government set out to rebuild its naval fleet and do so at home. It launched its National Shipbuilding Strategy (NSS) and effectively spawned a new shipbuilding ecosystem overnight.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe were\u00a0one of the small businesses at the time\u00a0perfectly positioned to raise\u00a0our\u00a0hand\u00a0and jump on board this\u00a0opportunity,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains Gina Pecore, Genoa\u00a0Design\u2019s\u00a0CEO. \u201cWe\u00a0found our footing pretty quickly\u00a0and\u00a0haven\u2019t looked back since.\u201d<\/em><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Since joining the NSS in\u00a02012\u00a0Genoa\u2019s workforce has grown from less than 20\u00a0to\u00a0a bench strength of 300.\u00a0Evolving in tandem with growth is the company\u2019s\u00a0capabilities\u00a0and\u00a0capacity\u00a0to take on\u00a0significantly\u00a0larger,\u00a0more\u00a0complex projects.\u00a0Increasingly\u00a0these\u00a0opportunities\u00a0exist\u00a0beyond Canada.\u00a0In 2020, Genoa\u00a0secured\u00a0a key role on the US Polar Security Cutter\u00a0(icebreaker)\u00a0program and will\u00a0soon\u00a0transfer\u00a0that expertise\u00a0by\u00a0starting\u00a0work on Canada\u2019s next polar icebreaker.\u00a0That\u2019s\u00a0two massive ships\u00a0for\u00a0two\u00a0different\u00a0nations\u00a0operating on both\u00a0poles.<\/span><\/p>\n

An intentional growth mindset<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Playing in the shipbuilding and national\u00a0defence\u00a0vessel\u00a0construction\u00a0industry is serious business.\u00a0Lives\u00a0and the security of countries are at stake.\u00a0Genoa\u2019s\u00a0unique\u00a0approach to\u00a0the way it\u00a0scales\u00a0the company and builds\u00a0teams\u00a0in a project-based environment\u00a0is key\u00a0to ensuring the\u00a0integrity of the work\u00a0they\u00a0do.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe have never\u00a0pursued growth for the sake of growth,\u201d<\/em> says\u00a0Pecore.\u00a0\u201cWe could have chased volume\u00a0by\u00a0adding\u00a0contractors\u00a0to get more projects\u00a0out the door \u2013 we haven\u2019t done\u00a0that,\u00a0and\u00a0that\u2019s intentional.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Genoa\u00a0Design\u00a0made\u00a0a day one decision\u00a0to invest in people, onboarding full-time employees rather than strictly contractors. That\u2019s a\u00a0rarity\u00a0in the world of mega-projects,\u00a0where onboarding\u00a0only\u00a0for\u00a0specific projects\u00a0or\u00a0timelines is the norm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0grow our team\u00a0with\u00a0a\u00a0long-term vision\u00a0for the company and its success,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0explains\u00a0Erika Kelland, Genoa\u2019s\u00a0Communications\u00a0and\u00a0Marketing Manager.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019ve made an intentional decision to\u00a0put people first and\u00a0invest in our culture.\u00a0We are a team that\u00a0delivers these projects as a\u00a0unit and\u00a0have always\u00a0recognized\u00a0the power\u00a0that\u00a0culture plays in that.\u00a0You don\u2019t have the same connection when you are a band of contractors\u00a0versus a\u00a0fully embedded, foundational\u00a0team.\u201d<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/em>

You\u00a0would\u00a0expect\u00a0the CEO of a company\u00a0in\u00a0a traditional\u00a0sector\u00a0like shipbuilding\u00a0to have\u00a0risen\u00a0the ranks from within the industry.\u00a0Gina Pecore\u00a0bucks that trend, with a\u00a0career\u00a0that\u00a0began\u00a0in the Royal Canadian\u00a0Navy\u00a0and\u00a0then grew into\u00a0senior business and communications\u00a0consultancy roles.\u00a0\u00a0This has trickled down into the DNA of the company\u00a0with\u00a0a surprising\u00a0percentage\u00a0of Genoa\u2019s employees\u00a0hired from\u00a0non-adjacent\u00a0industries.\u00a0It\u2019s in fact a deliberate strategy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u00a0made\u00a0a conscious\u00a0decision to look outside for talent and\u00a0then\u00a0place\u00a0people\u00a0in unexpected ways,\u201d<\/em> explains Pecore. \u201cHaving\u00a0widely\u00a0different\u00a0viewpoints\u00a0from other fields, for us that\u2019s an asset.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Genoa\u00a0is keenly interested in\u00a0a candidate\u2019s\u00a0resume\u00a0and their match to a role, but they\u2019re also interested in\u00a0a\u00a0person\u2019s\u00a0intrinsic qualities and the\u00a0way they see the world around them.<\/p>\n

The company\u2019s innovation approach demonstrates\u00a0that thinking in action.\u00a0Marine architects\u00a0and\u00a0engineers\u00a0join\u00a0software developers, graphic designers, project managers\u00a0and\u00a0even\u00a0bioinformaticians\u00a0(specialists concerned with\u00a0complex biological data\u00a0sets)\u00a0to solve\u00a0industry pain points and explore new market opportunities.\u00a0\u201cEach\u00a0brings to the table\u00a0perspectives\u00a0and\u00a0abilities\u00a0as unique as their\u00a0backgrounds,\u201d<\/em> according to Colin Corbett, Genoa\u2019s Associate Director of Innovation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not\u00a0just\u00a0about the pride of Newfoundlanders,\u201d<\/em> explains Pecore. \u201cThe fact that this\u00a0is\u00a0an ocean economy right here, really helps us, and the exponential leaps being made in the local tech sector fuels our potential even further.\u00a0Combine that with the fact that this province is an ideal place to live and work and suddenly, scaling a business\u00a0from\u00a0Newfoundland and Labrador\u00a0makes a whole lot of sense.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

One of the advantages of a thriving tech sector is the boost to\u00a0finding talent and\u00a0tech\u00a0partners.\u00a0\u201cThere\u00a0is a technology soup here,\u201d<\/em> says Pecore, \u201cwe are all in it, and it\u00a0provides\u00a0a lot of optimism, and technology-based expertise to grow\u00a0our\u00a0businesses.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0\u00a0She adds that being named one of the country\u2019s top growing companies\u00a0is not\u00a0just about Genoa, it\u2019s\u00a0reflective\u00a0of\u00a0the province. \u201cIt\u00a0speaks to a whole new way of looking at the geography of where we live and what\u2019s happening in that geography.<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/b>Now,\u00a0the whole idea of \u2018Can you deliver sustainable growth from Newfoundland\u00a0and Labrador?\u2019\u00a0has\u00a0an\u00a0answer.\u00a0It\u2019s \u2018yes, you can.\u2019\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Local\u00a0success\u00a0stories like\u00a0Genoa and\u00a0Verafin,\u00a0a fin-tech security\u00a0company\u00a0recently sold to Nasdaq\u00a0for $2.5 billion US, has\u00a0helped\u00a0shift the\u00a0lens on\u00a0the province\u00a0as\u00a0being\u00a0an exciting,\u00a0energetic\u00a0place to live\u00a0with serious opportunities\u00a0for\u00a0tech-enabled companies and talent.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe marine industry\u00a0here has been narrowly defined, often limited on one end to the fishery and on the other to offshore development. That\u00a0sometimes\u00a0made\u00a0recruitment\u00a0from the local market\u00a0tough,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0says Pecore. \u201cThe tech industry is putting a whole new face on that.\u00a0We\u2019re\u00a0attracting\u00a0people from different fields and places\u00a0who now see this\u00a0place as not just\u00a0a\u00a0viable option, but\u00a0as\u00a0an\u00a0exciting place to live\u00a0and work.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/span>\u00a0<\/em>

Scanning new horizons<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

Genoa\u00a0has\u00a0firmly\u00a0positioned\u00a0itself\u00a0as a\u00a0North American\u00a0shipbuilding tech\u00a0leader.\u00a0As\u00a0the company\u00a0continues\u00a0to\u00a0serve\u00a0customers\u00a0and do\u00a0the work of today\u00a0(and\u00a0there\u2019s plenty of it for decades to come),\u00a0the team is\u00a0well positioned to\u00a0look towards\u00a0the future\u00a0and what\u2019s possible,\u00a0applying what they do\u00a0beyond\u00a0their\u00a0immediate industry.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
