Building relationships through collaboration requires education as a two-way process. Information is shared and received. True collaboration happens when both sides are willing to contribute and prepared to listen. Our experience has shown that when accurate, honest information is provided, especially when it includes not just the what, but the why, the likelihood of success increases significantly.
Building Relationships Through Collaboration in Practice
To find partners who are open to collaboration, you first need to reach out. To know where to reach out, you need to understand the industry. Knowing who is building the ships, what is being built, why it is being built, and where projects are taking place helps identify potential opportunities. Understanding who is designing those vessels is equally important. Knowing where work is happening also highlights resource pressures that can open the door to new partnerships.
Since Talent Solutions Falls Under Genoa’s Business Development division, industry discussions are a normal and valuable part of our work. In fact. I routinely receive industry information from colleagues across the organization that helps identify potential leads and emerging opportunities.
A recent example was the MOU between Finland and the USA to build up to 11 Arctic Patrol Cutters. Several of the companies named were already Genoa clients. Staying informed allows us to immediately understand the relevance and potential impact for our organization and our partners.
Building Trust Through Education
Reaching out and making a sales pitch is only a small part of building a relationship. The real value comes from understanding a client’s pain points and helping them navigate challenges through education. This is where trust begins.
When we help potential clients understand both the what and the why, we move from being a service provider to being a strategic partner. Those conversations naturally lead to discussion about risk, mitigation, and long-term planning.
In one instance, we identified potential work at a competitor of an existing client. This led to a conversation about the risk of talent loss. As it turned out, they were already experiencing attrition. By helping them understand the broader industry picture, we opened the door to deeper discussions about how Genoa could support them. Education because the foundation for trust and future collaboration.
