The People Who Turn 3D Models into Buildable Ships

Jessica RocheGenoa News, Genoa Services

At Genoa Design, we turn 3D models into buildable ships through production-ready design driven by designers who understand shipyard reality, embrace complexity, and take pride in seeing their work come to life on the water.

For Jason Cox, that pride comes from navigating challenging projects — and evolving alongside them. “I’ve been working on the Polar Project since early 2024, and it’s been fast-paced, complex, and incredibly rewarding,” Jason says. “With an evolving scope, you’re constantly tracking technical changes and adapting the design.”

Polar wasn’t just another project — it pushed the team into new territory. The transition to Cadmatic Hull and Plant Modeller introduced a steep learning curve, demanding focus, collaboration, and resilience. “There was a lot to learn,” Jason admits. “But the team leaned in, supported each other, and really mastered the tools. Seeing that effort turn into real progress has been extremely rewarding — and we’re just getting started.”

That mindset—adaptability paired with accountability—is what defines Genoa’s approach to production-level design. Jason has seen that payoff before. His early work on the Offshore Oceanographic Science Vessel (OOSV), delivered to the Canadian Coast Guard, reinforced the importance of designing with the build in mind. “There’s a real sense of accomplishment knowing our work directly contributed to a ship being successfully built and delivered.”

While technical excellence drives the work, culture is what sustains it.

The People Behind the Build

For Brett Murphy, Genoa stands apart because of how people are valued — not just for what they do, but for who they are. “I’ve worked across many industries, and Genoa is the first place that truly feels like home,” Brett says. “You’re respected no matter your background, and your strengths are recognized and put to use.” The work is demanding and constantly evolving — but never at the expense of balance. “The pace keeps things interesting, but the flexibility lets everyone work in a way that fits their life,” Brett explains. “That trust makes a huge difference.”

And sometimes, it’s the small moments that reinforce the big picture. “Catered lunches and treat trolleys don’t hurt either — especially when everyone’s deep in the work.”

Together, these voices capture what’s behind Genoa’s production-ready designs: skilled people, real collaboration, and a shared commitment to building ships that work in the real world. At Genoa, the model is only the beginning. It’s the people behind it who make it buildable.
